BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - After playing a phenomenal statistical game against Rhodes, the Panthers were looking for a victory over Hendrix to end their first week of conference play with a perfect record. Birmingham-Southern swept the Warriors in three sets, battling hard to take the win.
The first set started out as an even matchup with the two teams trading the lead back and forth, with the Warriors taking the lead at 10-9. The Panthers had enough and took the next five straight points with kills from all around, making it 14-10. After Hendrix added a couple more points to their score, Birmingham-Southern took four straight to push the lead 19-12. The Warriors were able to find their fight and go on two runs that put them only one point behind the Panthers at 20-19. The fight continued on as Hendrix tied it up again at 23-23, looking to take their lead, but the Panthers were able to end it with kills from
Gigi Fields and
Rominey Willner.
Set two started off similar to the first set with a lot of even play. Kills from
Leah Nielsen and
Kennedy Dickens were able to push the Panthers lead to 10-6. A big block from
Kennedy Dickens and
Ainsley Schultz made it 13-9, then 16-10 after an error from the Warriors. Birmingham-Southern was able to boast a 21-12 lead over the Warriors, but once again Hendrix was able to find their fight and get back to make it 22-19. Even with their fight, the Warriors fell to the Panthers with three straight errors to give BSC the win 25-19.
Looking for the sweep, Birmingham-Southern took the early lead at 6-2 with kills from
Gigi Fields and
Rominey Willner. The Warriors wracked up some points, making it a tie at 9-9. The Panthers took the next five points, to take their lead back, with two big blocks from
Ainsley Schultz and
Kennedy Dickens, and an ace from
Kate Powell. Errors played a big part into the Warriors downfall and the Panthers were not done yet.
Rominey Willner put the Panthers into plus twenty play with a kill, 20-16.
Alyssa Coats brought BSC to match point with an ace, which caused the Warriors to call a timeout. Hendrix came out of the timeout ready to compete and held BSC at match point for the next five points, making it 24-23.
Kennedy Dickens ended the match for the Panthers with a kill, to end their conference week with three wins.
