BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Birmingham-Southern women's basketball team could not overcome a slow first quarter in their 73-58 loss to Huntingdon on Sunday.
The Hawks got off to a fast start with a 10-1 run from the opening tip. Five points from
Sheraton Foster cut the deficit to seven at 13-6, but the Panthers couldn't close the gap any further. Huntingdon went on to win the opening quarter 23-11. After a rough first quarter, 'Southern responded in a huge way with a 12-0 run to start the second quarter. However, the Panthers could not take the lead. After being tied at 23, Faith Johnson led the charge for Huntingdon with eight points to finish out the second quarter. The Hawks held off the Panthers and took a 39-31 lead into the half.
With a comeback in mind,
Montana Harris started the third period with two buckets to trim the lead to four. However, the Hawks continued to hold off the push from the Panthers and stretched their lead to as much as 14. Three late points by
Maya Cable saw BSC go into the final quarter down 11. Despite their poor shooting, 'Southern was not out of it only down eight with 2:33 to go. Huntingdon then went on a 10-3 run and closed the game out with a 73-58 win. The Panthers finished shooting 35% from the field and 0-11 from being the arc.
Maya Cable led the scoring for the Panthers with 19 points, and
Montana Harris recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
