JACKSON, Miss. - The Birmingham-Southern women's basketball team got back in the win column on Tuesday after defeating Belhaven for the second time this season.
Sheraton Foster's career-high 31 points led the Panthers to a 65-57 win.
The Blazers got off to a quick start at home by scoring the first two baskets of the game. Belhaven would then lead 8-4 with 4:18 to go in the opening quarter. The Panthers started to see shots fall after trailing early.
Audra Putman hit her first three of the afternoon, and
Sheraton Foster added four more points to go on a 7-0 run. The Panthers led 11-8 with 2:04 remaining in the quarter. The Blazers would score once more to cut the deficit to one, but the Panthers took the 11-10 lead into the second quarter.
Sheraton Foster scored eight of the team's 11 points in the first period.
The sophomore guard picked up where she left off and knocked down a three on the opening possession of the second quarter. 'Southern then added on four consecutive points to take an eight point lead just under two minutes into the period. BSC stretched their lead to as much as 11 with 2:30 to go in the first half. Belhaven looked to close the gap with a 7-0 run late, but
Maya Cable put out the fire with a three-pointer with nine seconds remaining. The Panthers would take a 31-24 lead into the break.
Belhaven continued their sharp shooting with a 7-0 run to start the second half. After leading for a majority of the game, the Panthers saw themselves tied at 31. However, 'Southern responded with another
Maya Cable three and a
Sheraton Foster and-one on a fastbreak to regain a six-point lead. In a quarter of runs, the Blazers then scored seven straight to go up 38-37 for their first lead since 3:25 remaining in the first quarter. After going down by two, senior
Audra Putman drained two huge threes to take the lead once again. BSC took a 46-43 lead heading into the final quarter.
After a tight contest so far, the fourth quarter would be much of the same. Belhaven would go on to tie the game at 49 a piece with 6:47 to go to set up an exciting finish. After already having 19 points,
Sheraton Foster took over late. On 'Southern's next possession, she broke the tie with a jumper to go up two. After a couple of big shots by
Maya Cable and
Ajailah Ogiemwonyi, BSC saw themselves up 56-50 with 4:41 remaining. Foster then scored eight consecutive points for her team, and the Panthers would never give the lead back. Foster scored 12 total points in the fourth as BSC went on to end their cold streak with a 65-57 win.
Sheraton Foster ended with 31 points on 10-15 shooting. She also had six assists and four rebounds.
Maya Cable finished with 14 points on 4-7 shooting from three, and
Audra Putman knocked down three threes in her 12-point game.
