MEN'S SOCCER TIES ONE, DROPS ANOTHER IN ROME

ROME, Ga. – Birmingham-Southern men's soccer traveled to Berry College to take on Methodist University and Wabash College this past weekend. After drawing against Methodist Saturday, the Panthers couldn't quite mount a comeback against Wabash on Sunday.

Saturday, Sept. 9 vs. Methodist
The Panthers got off to a great start with excellent spells of possession against the Monarchs. After a little over 17 minutes of play, the SAA Offensive Player of the Week Alessandro Jr. ripped a left-footed shot into the top left corner of the goal from about 25 yards out to open the scoring. This would be Alessandro's third goal of the week after his brace against Huntingdon last Tuesday. Despite having a few more chances, BSC went into the half with a 1-0 lead.

In the second half, the Panthers recorded two shots on goal each by Alessandro Jr. and Max Albertson. However, BSC could not extend their lead. In the 75th minute of the match, the Monarchs tied the game at one on a long chip by Steven Floyd. The Panthers couldn't recover from the punch and ended up drawing their first game on Rome 1-1.

Sunday, Sept. 10 vs. Wabash
With a quick turnaround in game two in Rome, the Panthers got off to a slow start against the Little Giants. After 14 minutes of play, Wabash got through on goal and slotted one away to take an early lead. A little over ten minutes later, Escalante found the ball at his feet in behind the BSC defense to double the Little Giants' lead. Birmingham-Southern midfielder Gage Estep pulled one back for the Panthers at the end of the half on a shot from outside the 18-yard box into the bottom left corner to give his team a little momentum into halftime.

In the second half, heavy minutes on the legs seemed to get the best of the Panthers. The Little Giants added a third goal after almost 55 minutes of play to go up by two. Vittorio Vopicelli scored for the Panthers on a ball from Max Albertson to make the score 3-2 with 20 minutes to go in the match. However, the Panthers couldn't quite piece together another great chance and ultimately came up short on the day 3-2.
