PANTHERS STORM BACK TO EARN TIE

Birmingham, AL. – Birmingham Southern women's soccer team competed against Covenant College Tuesday night in a 2-2 thriller.

Both teams created a lot of quality opportunities in the first half, but Birmingham-Southern created the first shot on goal with a right footed shot by Chaislyn Godleski

Covenant strikes first in the 56th minute with a goal by Emma Riggs. This was followed by another goal from the Scots in the 57th minute by Lila Wiley.

A moment of weakness sent Birmingham-Southern down 0-2.

After out shooting the Scots 9-4 in the first half the Panthers finally found the net. Juliet Williams took a shot that forced the Scots goalkeeper to make a save to her right. The save rebounded out to Millie Mathis who tucked it away in the right corner.

With just a few seconds remaining the Panthers had the ball deep in their attacking third. With one final push Chaislyn Godleski crossed the ball into a dangerous area, where Juliet Williams found the back of the net. A stunning goal that left the crowd roaring, as 9 seconds remained frozen on the scoreboard. A late storm by the Panthers would prove to be enough to end the game at 2-2.

Head coach, Corey Smith, had this to say after the game: "I'm very proud of these girls. In recent years, when this team went 2-0 down the game would've been over. Coming in as head coach in the summer, our staff made it a priority to embed a new mentality and establish some nonnegotiable's for this program. Tonight showed that our girls are beyond bought in with this and who we want to be. It's a great feeling. All the credit goes to the players".

He is looking forward to their next game at home against Huntingdon: "We're looking forward to it. We've played a lot of games in a short amount of time, but we're showing how much we want to compete and that's important. We had a minute of madness against Covenant that put us down 2-0, so we want to stay consistent through 90 minutes, and get more quality opportunities on offense in the next one".
