BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Birmingham-Southern softball team fell short on Opening Day after a double-header defeat against Stillman.
Game 1
The Panthers asserted dominance early in the first inning with Emma Jolley's bunt single to third base, bringing home Katie Hart and setting the tone for the contest. Building on their momentum, the Panthers extended their lead in the second inning courtesy of Isabella Furgason's clutch RBI to left field, taking a 2-run advantage.
The Tigers responded in the fourth, scoring four runs with back-to-back 2-out, 2-RBI doubles and singles, turning the game in their favor. In the top of the fifth inning, Stillman added to their lead with a 2-RBI in-the-park homer by Lauren Haskins.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Natalie Snow narrowed the deficit with a clutch RBI single down the left field line, scoring Katie Hart.
Even with 8 hits, the Panthers were unable to bridge the 3-run gap, resulting in a 6-3 loss in Game 1.
Game 2
Game 2 displayed strong offense from both sides, with Stillman taking an early lead in the 2nd inning from a well-executed sacrifice fly. BSC bats came alive in the fourth inning, tying the game at 1-1 from an Olivia Trout RBI single. RBI contributions from Maile White and Isabella Furgason, earned them to a 3-1 lead heading into the fifth inning.
The Tigers strung together five hits in the fifth inning, reclaiming their lead and making the score 4-3. BSC's Katie Hart responded with a bases loaded RBI single in the sixth tying the scoreboard at 4-4.
Stillman's Taylor Roland delivered a game-winning RBI single to right field in the 7th inning resulting in the Panthers falling in game 2 with a final score of 5-4.
