PANTHERS SWEEP BIRMINGHAM-SOUTHERN CLASSIC

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Panthers continue their strong start to the 2024 season with two dominant wins on Saturday. In game one, BSC defeated Wheaton (Ill.) by a score of 8-1. In game two, the bats were on fire as BSC took down Adrian College 12-5.

Game one
The Panthers quickly jumped to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first after four consecutive walks and an RBI ground out from Ty Truett. Wheaton cut the lead in half after a sacrifice fly in the 5th, but BSC immediately responded with a three run frame. That was led by a 2 RBI single from Shane Nelson

BSC extended the lead to 8-1 after scoring in the 6th and 7th innings. Shane Nelson came through again with an RBI double in the sixth. He finished the day with a team-high 3 runs batted in.

Hayden Sottile (1-1) threw very well on the mound, going 5 2/3 innings with 5 strikeouts and 1 earned run.  He was followed up by fellow Freshmen Tams Mullins and Jacob Fields. The BSC staff has now given up just one run in the last 18 innings combined.

Game two
Once again, the Panthers came out throwing punches. After a leadoff double from Eli Steadman that help set the tone, BSC put up 5 runs in the first inning off 7 hits. Adrian did plate a run in the 3rd, but BSC responded with 2 more of their own.

In the 6th, Adrian was able to claw back into a 7-5 ballgame. However, the Panthers quickly put all doubts to rest. They plated 2 in the 6th and 3 more runs in the 7th.

Drake LaRoche had another solid start. He went 5 2/3 with 7 strikeouts and 3 earned runs. All of those earned runs came in the 6th inning. Charlie Horne and Ricky Harrison both had good relief outings to help seal the deal.

The BSC bats were led by multi-hit games from Eli Steadman, Ian Hancock, Forrest Lietz and Shane Nelson. Nelson added 2 more RBI's in this game, giving him 5 on the day.
