PANTHERS COME UP SHORT IN SERIES AT OGLETHORPE

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Birmingham-Southern baseball team traveled to Oglethorpe for week two of SAA play. The Panthers cruised to a 6-2 win on Friday night, but they lost the series after getting swept in a doubleheader on Saturday.

Game 1
The Panthers put a run on the board quickly in game one. In the top of the first, Ian Hancock laced a single to right field that scored Eli Steadman. Josh Leerssen (4-0) kept the momentum going for BSC on the mound with a shutout frame. He continued to dominate in his outing, throwing five scoreless innings before surrendering two in the sixth. He also finished the day with seven K's and just two walks.

BSC put up five runs in the top of the sixth inning to really break the game open. Highlights from that inning were a single from Shane Nelson and a triple from Parker Ladd. Oglethorpe did respond with two runs in the next half inning, but it was not enough to make a comeback.

Tams Mullins closed the door in game one, going three and two-thirds innings while giving up 4 hits and striking out two. He was credited with his third save of the year.

Game 2
After a delayed start to game one of the doubleheader, BSC came out swinging again. Eli Steadman led off with a single and came around to score on a ground out from Andrew Dutton. Jakob Zito also had a sacrifice fly that scored Forrest Lietz. Oglethorpe answered back with two runs of their own after a double by Jonathan Cruz.

The Stormy Petrels led 3-2 going into the top of the fourth before Jackson Webster took back the lead with a two-run homer. Ty Truett also scored in the inning after an RBI ground out by Eli Steadman. Webster added another RBI in the fifth that made it a 6-4 ballgame.

It was really all Oglethorpe after that. They put up five runs in the sixth and four in the eighth to win the game by a score of 13-7. The Stormy Petrels out hit BSC 11-8. Four errors in the field by the Panthers also contributed to the big innings. Drake LaRoche (3-1) was handed his first loss of the year after a very strong start to the season.

Offensively, the Panthers were led by a two hit day from Jakob Zito and a three RBI day from Webster.

Game 3
Game two of the Saturday doubleheader was a seven inning contest. Oglethorpe jumped in front early and stayed ahead. The Stormy Petrels started their scoring in the bottom of the first with two runs on two hits. The Panthers continued their subpar play in the field with two errors in the inning.

Parker Ladd was able to cut the lead in half with a solo home run in the top of the third inning. In the bottom of the frame, Oglethorpe responded with a run of their own to make it 3-1. In the bottom of the fourth, the Stormy Petrels continued swinging hot bats to extend the lead to 6-1.

The Panthers rallied in the top of the seventh to try and make a comeback, but they fell just short by final score of 6-5. Parker Ladd, Forrest Lietz, Andrew Dutton and Jackson Webster all had RBIs in the last half inning.

Hayden Sottile (1-3) threw three innings for BSC, giving up five hits but only one earned run. Trip Barron, Jacob Fields, and Ricky Harrison also threw an inning a piece for the Panthers. On the offensive side the Panthers did have eleven hits. Eli Steadman, Ian Hancock, Andrew Dutton, Jackson Webster, and Parker Ladd all had multi-hit games.
