MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Birmingham-Southern baseball team won their fifth straight game and ninth in their last 10 with a 15-7 win at Huntingdon on Tuesday night.
After a big sweep this past weekend over Rhodes, the Panthers did not have a letdown against Huntingdon. Coming off a six-hit, three-home run weekend,
Charlie Banks knocked in the game's first run on an RBI single in the top of the first. With the bases still loaded,
Jakob Zito brought home two more runs in the next at bat.
Ty Truett and
Parker Ladd also recorded RBIs in the first to stretch the BSC lead to five before Huntingdon had an opportunity at the plate.
The Hawks scored a run in the bottom of the inning, but SAA Player of the Week
Ian Hancock doubled to left field in the top of the second to regain the five-run lead.
Huntingdon scored another run in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to four, but the Panthers continued to be ruthless at the plate. After
Eli Steadman walked,
Andrew Dutton crushed a ball over the fence for his sixth homer of the year to put the Panthers up 8-2 in the top of the fourth. An HBP and two walks loaded the bases in the same inning as
Grant Morgan stepped in the batter's box. He then put BSC at double-digit runs on an RBI single to put the Panthers in total control.
Carter Tyus and
Trip Barron continued to pitch well on the mound and held the Hawks scoreless in the next two innings.
Jakob Zito then led off the sixth inning with a solo homer to stretch the lead to nine. Huntingdon added their third run in the bottom of the inning, but the Panthers did not stop there.
Charlie Banks recorded his second RBI hit of the day with a double in the seventh before
Ian Hancock reached home on a wild pitch. The Panthers had a 10-run lead heading into the bottom of the seventh, but the Hawks prevented the run-rule with an RBI single.
Forrest Lietz brought home
Mitch Austin to regain the 10-run lead in the top of the eighth before
Andrew Dutton brought him home via a double to put the Panthers up 15-4. The Hawks scored three in the bottom of the eighth, but the Panthers finished the job with a 15-7 win.
