LEXINGTON, Ky. - For the first time since 2022, the Birmingham-Southern baseball team is moving on to the NCAA DIII Super Regionals after defeating host school Transylvania in the Lexington Regional title game.
The first two innings of the afternoon were scoreless in a tight championship contest before the Panthers got on the board first in the third.
Andrew Dutton broke the deadlock on an RBI single up the middle to bring home
Mitch Austin. BSC then loaded the bases before
Charlie Banks was hit by a pitch to double the lead.
In the bottom of the fifth inning,
Eli Steadman led off with his second solo homer of the regional to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead with less than half of a game to go.
The BSC pitching continued to deal as
Carter Tyus,
Charlie Horne, and
Jacob Fields combined to keep Transy scoreless through seven innings. The hosts finally got on the board in the top of the eighth on an RBI single to left field.
Needing insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth, the 'Southern offense delivered.
Ty Truett doubled down the left field line to push the lead back up to three before
Shane Nelson's sac fly gave BSC their largest lead of the day, 5-1.
Transy loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth and managed to bring a runner across, but
Ricky Harrison closed out the game with a ground ball fielded bare-handed by
Ty Truett for the third out of the inning. The 5-2 win gave the Panthers the regional sweep and a spot in the final 16 teams in the country.
