MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - After falling in game one on Friday night, the Birmingham-Southern softball team forced a game three after a walk-off in 11 innings of game two. The #2 seeded Panthers then came up short against #1 Berry in the final game of the championship series.
Game 1
The Vikings swept the Panthers in Birmingham in the regular season and picked up where they left off. In the bottom of the first in game one, Berry's Morgan Frye homered before three more runs were driven in to take a huge 5-0 lead early.
The Panthers managed a few hits but couldn't drive any runs across. Berry added runs in the fourth and fifth to put seven on the scoreboard with only six outs to go.
The Vikings managed to preserve the shutout and took game one 7-0.
Game 2
Birmingham-Southern was the home team on the scoreboard in game two after playing as visitors in game one. Olivia Trout started on the mound against the nationally ranked #5 Vikings with the hopes of forcing a game three. Through five innings, Trout was lights-out with only one hit allowed to a powerful Berry lineup.
In the bottom of the fifth, Isabella Furgason drove home Katie Hart to score the game's first run and gave BSC their first lead of the series.
The BSC lead only lasted an inning as the tying run was walked in with one out. Olivia Trout stayed in the game and managed to allow only the one run in the sixth.
Both sides remained scoreless through seven innings with the Panthers hoping to hand Berry their first conference loss of the season.
The first three and a half innings of extra softball were scoreless until Birmingham-Southern got their opportunity in the bottom of the eleventh. After throwing 11 innings and 169 pitches, Olivia Trout walked and moved to second after a Leah Wood sac bunt. With two outs, the Birmingham Pod hero Katie Hart came up to the plate with an opportunity for another walk-off. However, the sophomore didn't have to swing the bat as Trout stole third and took off for home on an overthrow by the catcher. Trout came home safely as BSC clinched the game two win and forced a winner-take-all game three.
Game 3
Coming off a dramatic game two win, the Panthers hoped to carry momentum into the final game of the championship series. However, Berry's Anna Jackson hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning to take command early.
Both teams were held scoreless in the second and third innings before BSC got going in the fourth. With two outs, Leah Wood crushed the ball to left center field to bring Olivia Trout and Natalie Snow across the plate, cutting the deficit to one.
Berry then restored their three-run lead in the bottom of the fourth on a sac fly and error to put themselves nine outs away from a conference title.
The Panthers couldn't quite rally as the Vikings scored four more runs on two singles in the bottom of the fifth to go up 9-2. Berry then went on to close the game out and win the SAA Championship series, 2-1.
At the conclusion of the tournament, BSC's Olivia Trout, Katie Hart, and Natalie Snow were named to the SAA Softball All-Tournament Team for their outstanding performances over the past couple weekends.
