Panthers pick up another home win with 57-52 victory over Austin College

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—
The Birmingham-Southern women's basketball team remains undefeated at home this season after a 57-52 victory over SCAC rival Austin College, Friday night in Bill Battle Coliseum.

The Panthers move to 11-5 overall and 5-1 in conference play, and are 8-0 in Battle, while the Kangaroos fall to 4-10 overall and 2-5 in the SCAC.

The Panthers scored first with a three-pointer from junior Sam Davidson within the first 15 seconds, and held the lead for almost the entire game, falling behind for a short time just before the half. The Panthers' largest lead in the first half came with 1:08 left to play in the period as BSC led by eight, 30-22. AC's Angeleena Young scored a three-pointer to close the first half with a score of 30-25.

BSC came out shooting in the second half as Davidson hit another three-pointer to open the half, and the Panthers stretched the lead to 12, 37-25, with 18:15 left in the game. Austin College countered with a jumper from Spenser Cruikshank to end the Panthers' scoring run, which was quickly followed by a layup and free throw by teammate Kersti Marusich to bring the score to 39-30 with 17:14 to play.

Austin College continued to close the gap with the Panthers, but would ultimately be defeated by two free throws from junior Kristin Moody with eight seconds left in the game.

Sophomore Melanie Short led the Panthers with 13 points, followed closely by Davidson with 11 points. Moody led the Panthers in both rebounds (6) and assists (3), and sophomore Alex Adams led with two steals.

BSC shot 36 percent (18-of-50) from the field, 23.1 percent (6-of-26) from three-point range, and 88.2 percent (15-of-17) at the free throw line. Austin College shot 31 percent (18-of-58) from the field, 13.3 percent (2-of-15) from the three-point range, and 66.7 percent (14-of-21) at the free throw line.

The Panthers ended the game with 12 turnovers to Austin's 10, and were out-rebounded by Austin, 41-38.

BSC's next game is a home contest against Colorado College this Sunday, Jan. 16, at noon in Bill Battle Coliseum.
