BSC stays undefeated at home with 75-68 overtime win against Rhodes

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—
The Birmingham-Southern women's basketball team stayed undefeated at home (7-0) with a 75-68 overtime win against SCAC rival Rhodes College, Saturday afternoon in Bill Battle Coliseum.

The Panthers move to 9-5 overall and 4-1 in the SCAC, while the Lynx fall to 3-9 overall and 1-4 in conference play.

Rhodes came out and scored the first three points of the game in the first minute, courtesy of a jumper from Bell and a free throw by Womack, but a three-pointer by Davidson almost immediately tied things up, and a jumper by Wilson put the Panthers up, 5-3, at the 17:46 mark. BSC stayed in the lead until the 8:29 mark when a jumper by McGill put Rhodes up by one, 20-19, and the lead changed hands three times after that. The Panthers ended up on the positive side of the score at the half with a 34-30 lead.

The Lynx came out shooting in the second half, tying things up 38-38 at the 15:53 mark, and then pulling ahead again, 41-28, on a three-pointer by McGill at the 14:57 mark. Rhodes stayed ahead of BSC for the next five minutes before the Panthers tied it up, 50-50, with 9:34 remaining on a three-pointer by Moody, and then took back the lead on a layup by Davidson. Although Rhodes would not pull ahead again in regulation, they tied it up three times, and the score stood even at 62-62 at the end of regulation.

Handelman and Bell scored two straight baskets for Rhodes to open the overtime period, but the Panthers responded with a 13-2 run to clinch the victory.

Junior Sam Davidson led the Panthers with 15 points, while senior Katelyn Wilson and junior Kristian Moody posted 13 points apiece and sophomore Caroline King had 11 points. Sophomore Melanie Short led with nine rebounds, and she and Moody also led with three assists each. Junior Ashton Spurgin also had two blocks.

For Rhodes, LaKeya McGill and Sharwil Bell scored 21 points apiece, and Amy Handelman had 14 points, a game-high 13 rebounds, and two blocks. Bell also pulled down 12 rebounds, McGill led with three assists, and Sarah Womack led with three steals.

BSC shot 38.2 percent (26-of-68) from the field, 44 percent (11-of-25) from three-point range, and 63.2 percent (12-of-19) at the free throw line. Rhodes shot slightly better overall, hitting 42 percent (29-of-69) from the field, but shot 28.6 percent (6-of-21) from beyond the arc and 50 percent (4-of-8) at the line.

The Panthers out-rebounded the Lynx, 47-41, while committing 11 turnovers to Rhodes' 12.

BSC is back in action at home next weekend, taking on Austin College, Friday night at 6 p.m., and Colorado College, Sunday at noon.
