Men's Soccer falls to Rhodes in SAA Quarterfinal

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Fifth-seeded Rhodes upset fourth-seeded Birmingham-Southern Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the Southern Athletic Association Men's Soccer Championship on Preston Goldfarb Field at Berylson Park.

BSC ends its season at 11-5-2, while Rhodes moves to 7-5-4 and advances to the semifinals next weekend, hosted by the highest remaining seed.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Rhodes controlled the ball for much of the first half, and finally capitalized in the 40th minute when Alec Rhodes headed the ball into the net off a long throw-in from Mark Robinson.
  • BSC played more aggressively on offense in the second half, taking five shots-on-goal in the final 22 minutes, but Rhodes keeper Riley Sheen stopped all five, recording seven total saves in the game.

NOTABLE

  • The Lynx out-shot the Panthers 19-11, although BSC had seven shots-on-goal to Rhodes' six.
  • Senior Scott Funston led BSC with four shots.
  • Junior goalkeeper Marvin Castellanos recorded five saves.
  • Rhodes took seven corner kicks to BSC's three.
  • It was the final game in the storied career of BSC Head Coach Preston Goldfarb, who announced his retirement at the beginning of this season after 33 years on the Hilltop.
  • Assistant Coach Greg Vinson, who played for the Panthers and has worked with the program for 20 years, will take over at the end of the school year.
