Box Score BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Birmingham-Southern men's soccer routed Huntingdon College 5-1 Thursday night at Berylson Soccer Park. The Panthers are 1-0 on the year.
It took less than nine minutes for BSC to get on the board. Senior Patrick Erickson (Washington, D.C./St. Stephens & St. Agnes School) scored the Panthers first goal of the season. He took a pass from fellow senior Spencer Nichols (Jacksonville, Fla./Christ's Church Academy) and placed it past Hawk keeper Eathan Small.
BSC went up 2-0 on a header from junior Adam Clausen (Baton Rouge, La./Episcopal HS). Redirecting a pass from sophomore Brother Swagler (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook HS) on the left side, Clausen slipped the ball to the opposite side of the goal and in.
With a foul in the box 4:30 minutes into the second half, senior Dallas Coyne (Vestavia Hills, Ala./Vestavia HS) took the penalty kick and put the Panthers up 3-0.
BSC earned a second penalty kick with 34:57 on the clock. Sophomore Luke Hambleton (Fort Walton Beach, Fla./Choctawhatchee HS) drilled it in to give BSC the 4-0 lead.
The Panthers extended their lead to 5-0 after senior Ryan Gill (Franklin, Tenn./Brentwood HS) headed in a corner kick from junior Trey O'Bryant (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Northridge HS).
Junior Marvin Castellanos (Vestavia Hills, Ala./Stetson University) earned the start for BSC. He spent 71 minutes in goal. He and the defense allowed only two shots while he was in the net. Huntingdon (0-1) scored its lone goal with a minute left.
The Panthers host the BSC Labor Day Classic this weekend at Berylson Soccer Park. They will face Franklin at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 4 and then Louisiana College on Monday, Sept. 5 also at 2:30 p.m.
