BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's tennis team opened its home season with an 8-1 win over Covenant College Saturday afternoon on the Ann Dielen Tennis Complex. The Panthers move to 2-1 overall with the win.
BSC swept doubles play. Anthony Pellegrini (Huntsville, Ala./Huntsville HS) and Jacob Weinacker (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook HS) fought back from a 5-4 deficit at #1 doubles to pull out the 7-5 win.
Jamie Bekaert (Johns Creek, Ga./Rivers Academy), Lee Thompson (Boaz, Ala./Boaz HS), and George Chunn (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood Academy) won quickly at the #4-6 positions.
The top three positions all split sets. Weinacker lost the first set but bounced back to win the next two at the #1 spot. And Alex Makarenko (Suwanee, Ga./Peachtree Ridge HS) won his first set in #2 singles and had to battle through a 10-7 tiebreak to pull out his match.
The Panthers remain at home for their next contest. They take on NCAA Division II opponent the University of Alabama at Huntsville tomorrow at 1 p.m.
