Box Score MOUNT BERRY, Ga. – The Birmingham-Southern men's soccer team fell to the Marietta Pioneers 2-1 on Saturday afternoon, the Panthers first loss of the 2018 season.
Marietta opened up the scoring in the 33rd minute and would take the 1-0 lead into halftime.
After the break, BSC found an opportunity to equalize off a corner kick. In the 48th minute, freshman defender Rafael Millan (Ft. Payne, Ala./Ft. Payne HS) sent a ball in that found the head of junior midfielder Ryan Hepp (Homewood, Ala./Homewood HS), who found the back of the net for his third goal of the season.
The 1-1 deadlock would finally be broken late in the game in the 82nd minute when Marietta's Noah Laliberty's cross found Austin Hilt, who scored what would be the eventual game-winner.
Birmingham-Southern was outshot by Marietta 21-11 and had eight fouls to the Pioneers four.
Senior goalkeeper Galen Curry (Birmingham, Ala./Spain Park HS), who played all 90 minutes in goal, finished the match with 10 saves. Curry's record stands at 3-1 after the loss.
After the defeat, Birmingham-Southern drops to 4-1 on the season. The Panthers will look to rebound on Wednesday, Sept. 12 at Belhaven. Kickoff for the game against the Blazers is slated for 7 p.m.
