Panthers Pound Past Centre 38-21

DANVILLE, Ky. – Birmingham-Southern football improved to 5-2 overall with its 38-21 road win over Centre College Saturday.  The Panthers are now 4-1 against Southern Athletic Association teams and are one of two teams with only one loss in conference play.

The ground game was key to BSC's win.  The backs accounted for 431 net yards and all five touchdowns.  Together, they made a new program record in yards per carry.  Robert Shufford (McKenzie, Ala./McKenzie HS) led the pack, earning a game and career-high 282 yards, breaking the record he set last week, and three touchdowns.  He averaged 13.4 yards per carry, going 66 yards on his longest of the day.

Hunter Kountz (Jefferson City, Tenn./Knoxville Catholic HS) and Zack Seay (DeFuniak Springs, Fla./Freeport HS) also earned touchdowns in the win.  Trevor Oakes (Somerville, Ala./Hartselle HS) completed 10-of-19 passes for 138 yards.  He also punted twice, putting one inside the 20.

It was a team effort on defense.  Ivan Villageois (Montgomery, Ala/Saint James School) led with a team-high seven tackles, six solo, and a pass breakup.  Garrett Stevens (Social Circle, Ga./Eastside HS) finished right behind him with six tackles, four solo, and a sack.  DJ Albright (Alpharetta, Ga./Milton HS) earned a game-high four pass breakups in the secondary.  He finished with five tackles, all solo.

The Panthers return to the Hilltop this coming Saturday.  They take on Austin College at 1 p.m.
