Box Score

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's soccer team lost to Belhaven University 3-2 at home on Saturday night, falling after a comeback effort by the Blazers.

After going up 2-0 on Belhaven (6-0-0), the Panthers surrendered three unanswered goals in the second half, dropping Birmingham-Southern to 3-3-1 on the season.

Forward Christian Hernandez (Fort Payne, Ala./Fort Payne HS) scored both of BSC's goals on Saturday. Hernandez opened up the scoring in the 37th minute, beating the Belhaven keeper after a well-placed through ball from freshman forward Coleman Jennings (Vestavia Hills, Ala./Vestavia Hills HS).

BSC would take the 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

In the second half, Hernandez scored BSC's second goal early, grabbing his brace in the 53rd minute. This time, the sophomore chipped the ball over the Blazer keeper as he came out of his goal. The goal, Hernadez's fourth of the season, was assisted by freshman Bryan Arteaga (Homewood, Ala./Homewood HS) and put the Panthers 2-nil up.

BSC's lead would not hold up in the end. Belhaven responded by pulling a goal back in the 62 minute on a shot from outside the 18-yard box. Then in the 71st minute, the referee pointed to the spot after ruling a foul by BSC in the box. The Blazers found the equalizer from the ensuing penalty kick, put away by Dalton Morgan.

Belhaven went up 3-2 in the 85th minute after a goal by Brendan Koehn. It would prove to be the game-winner for the Blazers.

The game was a physical one. The two sides combined for 21 fouls and four yellow cards were issued. BSC outshot Belhaven 20 to 15 and had six shots on goal.

Senior goalkeeper Kurt Moore (Euharlee, Ga./Darlington School) finished the match with four saves.

Birmingham-Southern will travel to MUW for its next game on Tuesday, Sept. 24. Kickoff for the game is slated for 7 p.m.
