Panthers Split with Majors in SAA Doubleheader

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The No. 8 Birmingham-Southern baseball team split with Millsaps College in a Southern Athletic Association doubleheader at Striplin Field on Saturday.

The Panthers fell in game one 6-2 before avenging in the loss with a blowout 12-2 win in game two of the doubleheader.

In game one, BSC scored two runs off RBI singles by Drew Love (Birmingham, Ala./Calhoun CC) and Cole Steadman (Birmingham, Ala./Briarwood Christian) in the bottom of the third, but the Panthers could not put together any more offense before the end of the nine-inning game.

Senior righty Andy Hammond (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS) got the start on the mound for BSC, tossing seven innings, allowing four earned runs off five hits and striking out eleven batters.

The Panthers rebounded in game two, putting crooked numbers on the board in the first, second, and fourth innings. The Panther offense exploded in the fourth with six runs, giving them a big 10-run cushion. BSC ended the game with 16 hits.

Freshman Camden McNearney (Kennesaw, Ga./Harrison HS) and senior Will Toner (Atlanta, Ga./Marist HS) led BSC at the plate. McNearney was 3-of-4 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored, while Toner finished the game 2-of-3 with a home run, a double, two RBI and a run scored.

Senior southpaw Hanan Mauldin (Florence, Ala./Florence HS) got the start on the bump and pitched five innings. After allowing two runs to start the game, Mauldin tossed four straight scoreless innings to earn the win, his second of the season. He struck out four batters and walked none in the outing. Junior Palmer Steventon (Chattanooga, Tenn./Lipscomb) came in in relief to close out the game.

After the doubleheader, Birmingham-Southern's record stands at 10-5 overall and 1-3 in the conference. The Panthers and Majors wrap up the series on Sunday, March 7 at 1 p.m.
