Box Score BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's lacrosse team used a second-half surge to down visitors Carthage 15-6 at Krulak Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
After trailing 4-3 at the halftime break and then giving up two goals to start the second half, Birmingham-Southern (4-4) regrouped and surged with 12 unanswered goals to down Carthage (4-1) and grab their fourth win of the season.
Junior attack Carter Watkins (Charlotte, N.C./Adrey Kell HS) opened up the scoring in the game, giving BSC a 1-0 lead to start. The Panthers and Red Men then traded goals for the remainder of the first 30 minutes with Carthage taking a slight 4-3 advantage into the break.
The visitors came out and the second half and scored two goals in the first five minutes of the third period, seemingly taking control. But down by three goals, the Panthers pounced back.
With 7:32 to go in the third period, sophomore attack Carter McAlpin (Trussville, Ala./Hewitt-Trussville HS) scored the first of what would become 12 consecutive goals by the Panthers. McAlpin would end the game with five goals and four assists with eight of those points coming during BSC's comeback run. In total, six different Panthers scored during the goal streak: McAlpin, Watkins, Taylor Carson (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook HS), Andrew Klementz (Birmingham, Ala./Greensboro College), Reid Harrison (Fayetteville, Ga./Starr's Mill HS), and Bowen Harris (Johns Creek, Ga./Mount Pisgah HS).
While his teammates were scoring goals, junior goalie Luke Fajack (Chapel Hill, N.C./Bridgewater College) was keeping the Red Men out. Fajack orchestrated a shutout in the final 25 minutes of the game and finished the game with 10 saves.
With the win, 'Southern improves to 4-4 overall heading into its first Southern Athletic Association game of the season against Sewanee on Friday, March 13.
