DANVILLE, Ky. - In what was possibly the SAA conference game of the week the Birmingham-Southern football team overcame five turnovers to keep their perfect season alive with a 28-21 win over the Centre Colonels.
The Panther offense started the game slow. After their first drive resulted in a three and out, the next drive resulted in a turnover.
Trey Patterson fumbled the ball before Centre scooped it up and scored to take a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter. The offense got the ball back but could not put together a drive that resulted in points. The Panthers punted the ball back to Centre.
The Colonels proceeded to go on a eight-play, 65-yard drive that resulted in a touchdown. Centre missed the ensuing extra point and would lead 13-0.
The Panthers responded with a drive resulting in a touchdown to cut into the lead 13-7. A quick possession ended with a 49-yard pass from
Trey Patterson to Brandon Rew. After one quarter of play the Panthers trailed Centre 13-7.
The turning point of the first half came late in the second quarter. After Patterson fumbled on a running play that was recovered by a Centre linebacker at the Colonel's own one-yard line it looked like the Panthers would go to half down six. On the first play of the Centre drive, the Colonels fumbled the football and was recovered by BSC at the one-yard line, giving the Birmingham-Southern offense a very short field to work with. Shufford found the endzone, and
Zach Ford converted the extra point to give BSC a 14-13 lead, which they would hold onto as the two teams went into halftime.
Centre opened up the second half with a scoring drive of six-plays for 59 yards resulting in a touchdown. The Colonels attempted a two-point conversion and successfully converted to give them a seven point lead. The rest of the third quarter saw no scoring and the Panthers entered the fourth quarter trailing 21-14.
A methodical drive spanning four minutes and 31 seconds saw the Panthers tie the game up early in the fourth quarter. On the very next Panther possession,
Trey Patterson stunned the Centre defense running in for what would end up being the game-winning touchdown. A 65-yard run gave BSC a 28-21 lead.
Birmingham-Southern's defense became a brick wall the rest of the game not allowing the Colonels to score and helping the Panthers escape with a 28-21 victory to keep their perfect season alive.
