SAN ANTONIO, Texas - A basket with 0.3 seconds remaining, left Birmingham-Southern stunned as they fell to Southwestern 78-76. The Panthers and the Pirates battled down to the wire, each time one team pulled away the momentum would shift and the other would get right back into the game.
Southwestern came out firing on all cylinders as they led at every media after each media timeout in the first half. It took the Panthers a little while to find their grove, but they finally found it and took off. After falling behind by as much as 16 at one point the Panthers were led by
Josh Childers and
Jay Gillispie to cut into the deficit and ultimately take the lead after an
Evan Sigler three-pointer with three second left in the half. The Panthers took a 40-39 lead into halftime.
The Panthers carried that momentum into the second half and built their lead up to as much as nine (48-39) with 18:47 left in the second half. The teams continued to go back and forth, but BSC could never extend their lead by more than nine points. The Panthers led for more than 18 and a half minutes in the second half.
As the game came down the stretch the Pirates hit clutch shot after clutch shot. Southwestern would hit a layup to take the lead with 1:43 remaining, a three-pointer to tie the game with seven seconds left, and lastly a floating jump shot to ultimately win with 0.3 second left.
The Panthers were stunned as the ball went through the hoop and lost 78-76.
