MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Birmingham-Southern football opened with a bang Saturday as the Panthers shutout Southern Athletic Association rival Rhodes College 52-0 to open the season. The offensive onslaught tied a program record for scoring.
Trevor Oakes (Somerville, Ala./Hartselle HS) passed for a game-high 186 yards and two touchdowns in the win. His longest was a 58-yarder to
Branden Rew (Fayetteville, Ga./Starrs Mill HS) who finished with a game-high 98 reception yards and two touchdowns.
Robert Shufford (McKenzie, Ala./McKenzie HS) rushed for a game-high 125 yards and a touchdown, averaging 10.9 yards per carry.
Zack Seay (DeFuniak Springs, Fla./Freeport HS) also netted 100 yards on the ground with two touchdowns.
Defensively, the Panthers were led by
Carson Walter (Fayetteville, Ga./Trinity Christian HS) who earned six tackles, four solo with one tackle for a loss of two yards, two pass breakups, and an interception.
Myles Myers (Alpharetta, Ga./Johns Creek HS) also had an interception. He returned it 38 yards for BSC's third touchdown. Collectively, the defense didn't allow Rhodes into the red zone all day. They held the Lynx to just 32 total offense yards all game.
BSC (1-0, 1-0 SAA) returns to action on February 13 when they return home to take on Berry College at 6 p.m. in Krulak Stadium.
