NCAA REGION: Panthers Advance Past Wash & Jeff

HIGH POINT, N.C. - Birmingham-Southern College scored nine runs in the final two innings to help secure a 12-10 win over No. 2 seed Washington & Jefferson in its first game of the 2021 NCAA Division III Baseball Regional at Truist Point Stadium Thursday.  The win snapped a 14-game win streak by the Presidents (36-2) and a 37-game streak of not allowing more than six runs.

Luke DePiero (Atlanta, Ga./The Walker School) singled up the middle to start the game and scored on an RBI groundout by Drew Love (Birmingham, Ala./Gardendale HS) to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. DePiero led the Panthers with three hits (3-for-6) in the game.

Jack Fleming (Suwanee, Ga./Lambert HS) added some insurance in the top of the sixth with a two-run home run to right field after Love was hit by a pitch. The homer proved useful, as Washington & Jefferson scored four in the bottom of the sixth to take a one-run lead, 4-3.

After falling behind in the sixth, BSC exploded for six runs in the top of the eighth.

Cole Steadman (Birmingham, Ala./Briarwood Christian) tripled to start the eighth, and tied the game on an RBI single by Love. Alfredo Granier (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents' Episcopal) later delivered a two-out, two-run double. Camden McNearney (Kennesaw, Ga./Harrison HS) and Will Evans (Peachtree City, Ga./Starrs Mill HS). Williams and DiPerio each drove in runs in the inning. Garnier also drove in one as part of a three-run ninth inning. Love, Granier, Dutton and Williams each had two hits.

The President's tacked on six runs in the bottom of the ninth, including a two-out, three-run home run by Adam Moore.

BSC out-hit W&J, 15-9.

Robbie Lively (5-1) (Helena, Ala./Southern Union) earned the win in relief with 2 2/3 scoreless innings after 5.1 innings of work by starter Andy Hammond (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS), who allowed four runs off five hits.

Birmingham-Southern (26-14) will meet Lynchburg in the winner's bracket Friday at 6 p.m. CT. Lynchburg defeated LaGrange College, 4-1, Thursday night.
