ATLANTA, Ga. - The Birmingham-Southern volleyball team won their first conference match up this season with a 3-1 win over Oglethorpe.
Kennedy Dickens had a phenomenal game with 11 kills, 3 aces, and 4 blocks.
The Panthers took the first point in set one with a kill from
Alyssa Coats to start off the match. The Oglethorpe Petrels fought back and went toe to toe with the Panthers throughout the set, before taking the lead at 13-10 and holding it to 16-10. A pair of kills from
Alyssa Coats and
Kennedy Dickens helped the Panthers go on a massive 8 point run to take the lead 19-17. The Panthers took the first set 25-21.
Oglethorpe came out strong in the second set, taking the early lead of 9-0. A kill from
Leah Nielsen started the momentum for the Panthers to go on a 7 point run to tighten up the set 11-8. Continuing the fight, the Petrels battled and eventually took the second set 25-19.
Birmingham-Southern took no time in the third set, taking the early lead at 6-3. Back to back kills from
Gigi Fields and
Emily Buhl pushed the Panthers to 11-7. Keeping up with their momentum,
Ansleigh Dailey served three aces in one service run to bring the Panthers to a 20-12 lead. A lot of kills from the Panthers in the set and they finished it off with three more, ending the set 25-17.
The Panthers and Petrels went back and forth, starting off the fourth set at a close 7-5 lead. Back to back aces from
Kennedy Dickens gave Birmingham-Southern a 9-5 lead. Oglethorpe fought back and tightened up the Panthers lead to only 11-10. But the Panthers pushed right back and took the lead 15-10 after four attack errors from Oglethorpe. Five more kills to end the match for the Panthers with a final set score of 25-19. The Panthers took the first conference victory 3-1.
