PANTHERS DEFENSE HELPS SECURE WIN OVER MILLSAPS

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Birmingham-Southern defense came up big multiple times in the game to help the Panthers secure a win during homecoming weekend on the Hilltop. BSC beat Millsaps 28-0 while making six 4th down stops and forcing one turnover.

The Birmingham-Southern offense started quickly. The defense forced a quick three-and-out helping the Panthers take over at their own 42-yard line. On the very first play from scrimmage for BSC Matt McClary found Jon Lewis wide open in the middle of the field for a touchdown. The Panthers quickly went up 7-0. The Panther defense kept Millsaps from scoring on their second drive and took over at the 24-yard line. The second drive for BSC was much different than the first. This time they ran nine plays taking 4:17 off the clock and extending their lead to 14-0.

Millsaps looked to respond as they had a sustained drive and found themselves inside the BSC 25-yard line after just one play on offense. A big kickoff return helped them with great field position. The Majors would get down to the 18 before going for it on fourth down, but failed to make the line to gain and turned the ball over on downs. Neither team was able to find the endzone for the remainder of the quarter. During Millsaps first drive of the second quarter they marched down inside BSC territory before the BSC defense gained some momentum back. Jimmy Anderson intercepted a pass along the sideline and gave the ball back to the Panthers.

BSC took full advantage of the turnover as the possession concluded with a 40-yard touchdown pass from McClary to Branden Rew. BSC extended their lead 21-0. After a couple change of possessions with no team able to muster points, BSC was set to punt the ball back to Millsaps. The Majors were able to get through and block the punt giving them some much needed momentum. The Majors were able to get to the BSC one-yard line. They rushed up the middle twice on third and fourth down but the Panther defense got the better push on both downs to stop the ball carrier short and regain possession after the turnover on downs. BSC went into halftime up 21-0.

Out of halftime Birmingham-Southern looked to get momentum back on their side but a fumble did not help. Millsaps forced a fumble and recovered it setting them up at the Birmingham-Southern 31-yard line. On the first play of the drive Millsaps got down to the BSC one yard line again. Again, it was the same result. BSC stuffed Millsaps three times and forced one incompletion. BSC took over the ball at their own one yard line. No team scored in the third quarter.

In the fourth BSC stopped Millsaps on fourth down two more times, both coming from the redzone. The Panthers extended their lead late after Grayson Stacey ran in for a 30-yard score to make it 28-0.

The game would go final after a kneel down and the Panthers won 28-0.
