BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Birmingham-Southern men's basketball team opened up the Black-Tie Classic with a loss to MUW. The Panthers lead at halftime but were unable to hold onto the lead and lost 97-87.
The Panthers got down early in the first half trailing 21-10 at the under-12 media timeout. With just under eight minutes to go in the half the Panthers went on a 9-1 run to cut the Owl lead to three. A three by
Charlie Barnett, and a steal and layup off the MUW ensuing inbound pass gave the Panthers the momentum they needed to get back in the game. With 3:10 left in the period Martise Jackson tied the game up with a layup.
Both teams played evenly for the rest of the half but it would be the Panthers with the upper hand going into halftime. A layup by
Cam Glover gave the Panthers a one point lead headed into halftime.
Coming out of halftime the Panthers started off on a 5-0 run to extend their lead to six points. MUW then went on 6-0 run to tie the game back up. The teams would trade leads for a good portion of the second half before MUW started to pull away with just under 10 minutes to play. The Panthers were unable to get the stop they needed in crucial situations and MUW would pull away. The Owls would defeat the Panthers 97-87 in the opening game of the Black-Tie Classic.
