LATE SUREGE LEADS PANTHERS PAST SCOTS

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Birmingham-Southern men's basketball team picked up it's third non-conference win over the Covenant Scots. The Panthers defeated the Scots 81-79 on Wednesday, Dec. 28.

Several players highlighted the stat sheet for the Panthers as Birmingham-Southern moved to 7-4 on the year. Josh Childers recorded 17 points in the game as the senior recorded his eighth consecutive game scoring in double figures. Jay Gillispie recorded his second career double-double in a 14-point, 12-rebound performance. Martise Jackson and Kaleb Green each recorded 12 points. The 12 points were a season-high for both student-athletes.

After Covenant jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead to open the game, Birmingham-Southern responded with a 11-3 run and took their first lead of the game, 11-8. Both teams would trade leads before Covenant found their rhythm on offense and started to pull away. The Scots hit six of their next 10 shots to take a 33-28 lead over the Panthers. It was a tight ballgame all throughout the first half, with the biggest lead in the first 20 minutes being 12-points at the 34 second mark.

The Panthers erased the 12-point deficit with a 16-4 run to start off the second half. They tied the game up 53-53 with 14:45 left in the game. Again the ballgame was tight for most of the second half with no team leading by more than five points. Down the stretch the Panthers got the stops and scores they needed to win the game and walked away with a 81-79 victory.
