PANTHERS WIN GAME ON FINAL OUT AT THE PLATE

DEMOREST, Ga. - The Panthers took a late lead in the eighth inning after Brian Williams singled to drive in two runs. In the top of the ninth it would be Will Lantis that called game after throwing out the tying run at home to give the Panthers a 6-5 victory over Christopher Newport.

The Panthers opened up the scoring in the third inning after the first two batters reached base and later advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Cole Steadman then brought in one run after grounding out to third base. That is all the Panthers would push across in the inning. Christopher Newport got that run back in the top of the fourth and the game remained tied 1-1 after four innings.

CNU carried over the offensive momentum as they wound up scoring three in the fifth inning to take a 4-1 lead. In the bottom half of the inning BSC took advantage of three errors to cut into the lead and trailed 4-2 after five innings of play. Davis Williams worked out of a jam in the sixth to keep the Captains scoreless. Birmingham-Southern used that momentum to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning. The Panthers plated two runs on three hits, with Brian Williams tying the game on an Andrew Dutton single to right field.

After a scoreless seventh inning for both teams, Birmingham-Southern got the bats going again in the eighth plating two runs on three hits. They also got help from another CNU error in the inning. With runners on first and second, and two outs in the inning, Brian Williams delivered with a single up the middle to plate one run. On the play the center fielder threw the ball to third base trying to throw out the trailing runner but sailed the ball over the head of the third basemen allowing Will Lantis to score. The Panthers took a 6-4 lead to the ninth inning.

Christopher Newport got two of the first three batters on base in the ninth. After an error brought home a run, the Captains looked to tie the game. The next batter hit a fly ball to shallow left field, and the runner from third tagged up. Will Lantis threw a bullet to the catcher, who tagged the runner out and sealed the 6-5 victory for the Panthers.
