PANTHERS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Birmingham-Southern baseball team picked up a quality win over nationally ranked Washington University in St. Louis (WASHU), but fell in the night cap to Trinity (Texas).

Game one
The BSC bats came out hot scoring two runs in each of the first two innings to give them a comfortable 4-0 lead after two. WASHU was able to push a run across in the fifth to get on the scoreboard with a two-out triple. BSC was unfazed by the Bears run that inning and responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the fifth inning. The Panthers took advantage of a fielding error by WASHU and made them pay, scoring two runs after the error on a Camden McNearney homerun to left field.

The Bears added a run in the seventh, but BSC would get it back in the eighth and wound up winning the game 8-2. Tristan Harvin dazzled in the Panthers home opener throwing six innings, allowing one run, and striking out nine batters and walking none.

Game two
The Panthers returned to the field in the night cap of the Birmingham-Southern Classic triple header. Another nationally ranked opponent awaited them in Trinity Texas.

Trinity got on the board first after two walks, a stolen base and a hit drove in two runs. Josh Leerssen worked out of the inning only giving up the two runs. Leerssen did a great job working out of jams in the second, third innings to keep the Tigers lead at 2-0 and the Panthers in the game. Preston Jenkins came on to relieve Leerssen and he too worked out of a jam in the fourth inning.

Camden McNearney cut the Trinity lead in half in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo homerun, his second on the day. Jenkins tossed three scoreless inning striking out six batters. In the top half of the seventh, Trinity was able to add that run back on a solo homerun. But in the bottom half of the seventh the Panthers got that run back after three straigth singles brought in the run.

The Bats came alive and the teams matched each other in the eights each scoring two runs in their half of the inning. Down one and headed to the ninth the Panthers were looking for a shutdown inning. They were unable to get that as the Tigers took advantage of two walks and scored two in the ninth to extend there lead to 7-4. The Panthers could not get the bats going in time and fell to trinity 7-4 after going three-up, three-down in the ninth.
