GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Birmingham-Southern women's lacrosse team wrapped up their 2022 spring break trip with a tough battle against Southwestern (Texas). The Panthers were down by as much as seven goals but fought back in the second half to cut the lead to four and gain some momentum. They could not get any closer as they fell in their spring trip finale 14-9.
The first quarter was a back-and-forth battle between the two teams with the period ending in a tie. BSC got on the scoreboard first with a goal from
Lizzie LaVangie. Southwestern scored the next two goal and held for about nine minutes.
Kathleen Napier tied the game with a goal with three seconds left in the quarter to give the Panthers some momentum heading into the second quarter.
The momentum did not carry over into the second quarter. Southwestern made adjustments and outscored the Panthers 6-1 in the second quarter. The Pirates took a 8-3 lead into halftime.
Out of halftime the Pirates scored the first two goals to take a 10-3 lead with 12:20 left in the third quarter. After the Panthers went down by seven goals they started to turn their game around. They cut the lead to four after outscoring Southwestern 5-4 in the third period. The five goals came from four different players. The Panthers headed to a pivotal fourth quarter down 12-8.
In the fourth quarter the Panthers were looking to cut the lead goal by goal but the Pirates defense stepped up and only allowed the Panthers a single goal in the quarter. BSC was unable to get any closer than four goals and fell 14-9.
