BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Birmingham-Southern baseball team came back from a 7-2 deficit to defeat Sewanee 12-10 and sweep their opening weekend of SAA play.
Sewanee got on the board first in the top of the second inning as they pushed across three runs on five hits and one Panther error. BSC got two of those runs back in the bottom of the inning. After two quick outs, Birmingham-Southern went to work.
Brian Williams reached base on a bunt single and later stole second base, after a walk, back-to-back singles drove in two runs for the Panthers.
Sewanee then answered that with a four spot in the top of the third to take a 7-2 lead after two and a half innings. BSC kept the momentum going on offense scoring three of their own in the bottom half of the inning to stay within two runs of the Tigers. Sewanee added a run in the top of the fourth and took an 8-5 lead at the half way point of the game.
Birmingham-Southern was held scoreless through the middle three innings but came alive late.
Jack Fleming hit his fourth homerun of the year to cut into the Sewanee lead. In the eighth inning the Panther bats got hot and exploded for six runs on four hits and came all the way back down to take a 12-8 lead.
In the top of the ninth, two errors gave Sewanee life as they were able to score two runs.
Davis Williams shut the door striking out two and getting the final batter to bounce to second base for a weekend sweep of conference opponent Sewanee.
