PANTHERS MOVE ON TO SECOND ROUND OF SAA TOURNAMENT

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Birmingham-Southern softball team took down the Centre Colonels in an 8-0 run-rule game to advance to the second round of the Southern Athletic Association Conference Tournament.

Caroline Campbell got things moving for the Panther defense, facing five batters in the top of the first but holding the Colonels to a scoreless inning. Campbell saw a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the second to help BSC keep their power moving. In the bottom of the third, the Panthers put up 6 runs on 6 hits to take large lead over the Colonels. Alyssa Fowler was the one to start it off with a RBI triple to center field to score Morgan McGuire. Kailey Walters followed that up with a single to bring home Fowler. Izzy Berkopec wanted a part in the action with a three RBI triple to right field, putting the Panthers lead at 5-0. Kaylyn Chapman put up the final run of the inning with an RBI single that brought in Berkopec.

Campbell saw a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the fourth, allowing Birmingham-Southern to keep their lead. Leah Wood singled to left field in the bottom of the fourth to add a seventh run to the Panthers lead. The BSC defense fought off the Colonel offense in the top of the fifth to keep the run-rule dream alive. After a double from Sam Hilyer in the bottom of the fifth, Kaylyn Chapman bunted to bring in Hilyer and complete the run-rule for the Panthers.
