BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - After getting out to an early 4-0 lead against one of the top pitchers in the conference, Birmingham-Southern could not get the sticks going again. Sewanee took the lead in the fourth inning and added nine runs in the final two frames to shock the Panthers in game one of the BSC Pod in the Southern Athletic Association Tournament.
Birmingham-Southern drew first blood in the bottom of the first inning posting four runs on three hits, including a
Brian Williams two-run homerun to left field. After a scoreless second inning by both teams Sewanee broke into the run column. Two doubles in the inning pushed across three runs for the Tigers and got them back in the game. The following inning they added four runs to take the lead 7-4.
Birmingham-Southern was held scoreless in the second, third, and fourth innings, but got back in the run column in the fifth. A two-run homerun by
Cole Steadman gave the Panthers some life and cut into the Sewanee lead 7-6. With momentum on their side, BSC went out the next two innings and held the Tigers scoreless. With two outs in the seventh inning Steadman got on base, and then proceeded to steal second. Shortstop
Noah Best singled through the right side scoring Cole and tying the game for the Panthers.
As the game headed to the top of the eighth and momentum squarely on the Panthers side. Sewanee changed that quickly by putting three runs up in the eighth to retake the lead 10-7. Birmingham-Southern could not find any late inning magic and were held scoreless in the eighth and ninth. Sewanee tagged on six insurance runs in th ninth and upset the top-seeded Panthers 16-7.
