LYNCHBURG, Va. - Young arms and a veteran lineup all played a part in helping the Birmingham-Southern baseball team sweep the Lynchburg Regional. The Panthers now advance to the Super Regional round of the NCAA Division III National Championships.
The Panthers got the scoring started early plating two runs in the first and taking a 2-0 lead. BSC then added a run in the second after Andrew Dutton reached on a fielders choice scoring Brian Williams on the play.
Salve Regina got a run back in the fourth inning to cut into the lead but that would be as close as they would get. Birmingham-Southern broke the game open in the fifth inning as they scored six runs on five hits. Jack Fleming and Will Lantis each doubled in the inning.
Salve Regina added a run in the sixth but that would be the last of the scoring for the Seahawks. The Panthers bullpen held them scoreless the rest of the game.
The Panthers advanced to the Super Regional round for the second time in the Division III era. Five Panthers received Lynchburg Region All-Tournament team honors for their performances in the regional. Jack Fleming, Brian Williams, Andrew Dutton, Cole Steadman, and Preston Jenkins all were awarded All-Tournament team. Junior shortstop Noah Best was named Most Outstanding Player.
