BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Birmingham-Southern baseball team fell by a score of 9-8 to Trinity University (Texas) in game one of the Super Regional series. The Panthers allowed nine runs with only four of them being earned.
Trinity got the scoring started in the third inning. After putting out two of the first three batters that came to the plate, it looked like another scoreless frame for
Joey White. The Trinity offense then had back-to-back hits to plate two runs and take a 2-0 lead after three innings of play. As the game moved to the top of the fourth the Panther bats woke up.
In the top of the fourth inning
Noah Best hit a two-run home run to tie the game. The Panthers were unable to push across anymore runs in the inning. Just as momentum started to get back on Birmingham-Southern's side, Trinity came right back. In the bottom of the fourth inning the Tigers pushed three runs across to retake the lead 5-2. The Panthers did not back down though.
In the bottom of the top of the fifth inning the Panthers came right back to regain the lead 6-5. After two singles, a sac bunt, and a walk Best unloaded for his second home run of the game. The first basemen hit a grand slam to give the Panthers a 6-5 edge. With all the momentum on the Panthers side made quick work of Trinity in the bottom half of the inning.
As the game moved to the sixth inning BSC was clinging to a one run lead. Trinity took advantage of an error by the Panthers to tie the game at six. Both teams were unable to plate a run in the seventh inning and the game went to the last two frames tied. In the bottom of the eighth inning Trinity again took advantage of an error this time bringing in three runs to take a 9-6 lead after eight innings.
With the Panthers three outs away they started to rally. The first three batters of the inning reached base safely and cutting the Tiger lead to two runs.
Ian Hancock then grounded out to the first basemen, but drove in a run in doing so to cut the lead to one run. With two outs and the winning run standing on second base, the Panthers were looking for
Jack Fleming to come through for them and tie the game or take the lead. On an 0-2 pitch Fleming flew out to left field to end the game.
