JACKSON, Miss. – The Birmingham-Southern women's soccer team earned their first SAA victory of the season on Saturday vs. Millsaps to give themselves the #6 seed in the SAA tournament.
To start the match,
Abby Morrow almost put her side ahead early after two quick shots inside the opening four minutes. Millsaps then recorded the next two shots on frame forcing
Grace Elsevier into a couple of saves.
Kennedy Olheiser and
Sophie Smith put two shots within the goalposts late in the first half, but Emily Lozano was up to the task with two saves for Millsaps. Both sides went into the break tied at 0.
Ali Schroeder recorded the first shot on goal of the second half, but the Panthers were still unable to break the deadlock. In the 69th minute, freshman
Chaislyn Godleski read the deflected touch off of the Millsaps defender and got in behind 1v1 with Lozano in goal for Millsaps. She was then able to place the ball just under the crossbar to score the first goal of her collegiate career and give her team a crucial 1-0 lead. Immediately after the goal,
Grace Elsevier was forced into two big saves, but the Panthers back line stayed very strong throughout the rest of the match. They went on to earn their fourth clean sheet of the season. BSC went home victorious on the night 1-0 hoping to build momentum for the SAA tournament.
