SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Birmingham-Southern volleyball team played their third and fourth consecutive matches away from home and came up short on Friday at Sewanee and Sunday at Centre.
Game 1 vs. Sewanee
In set one, the Panthers got off to a hot start and took an early 7-4 lead. However, Sewanee went on a 4-0 run after a 9-8 lead by BSC. The Panthers did recover though and fought back to tie the set at 18 after a
Taylor Bentley kill. BSC held a 23-22 lead late in the opening set, but the Tigers then put together three consecutive points capped off by a service ace to take a 25-23 win in set one.
Sewanee continued using their momentum from the end of set one into set two. They got off to a commanding 9-2 lead, but 'Southern did not bow out easily. The Panthers rallied five-straight points headlined by three
Claire Hayes kills to cut the deficit to two. However, BSC couldn't tie or regain the lead, and the Tigers impressively held the lead throughout the second set. They went onto claim set two by a score of 25-20.
The third set saw the Tigers keep their foot on the gas by taking a 15-8 lead. the Panthers trimmed the Sewanee lead to four late in the set at 20-16, but the home side then pieced together five consecutive points to win set three 25-16 and complete the sweep on the night.

Game 2 vs. Centre
Early in set one, the Panthers trailed 10-9 after back-and-forth play. They then took a 12-10 lead after a
Kylie Wilhelmi kill and a
Claire Hayes service ace. The battle between the two sides continued with the score tied 16-16 on the back half of the opening set. Centre then caught fire and scored six-straight points to take control 22-16. The Panthers scored the next two points, but the Colonels then closed out set one with a 25-18 win.
In the second set, the Panthers grabbed a 9-6 lead after two
Emily Buhl kills early. Centre again rallied by putting five consecutive points on the board to take the lead 11-9. 'Southern did not go away and only trailed by one at 15-14. Centre then rallied again and put up four-straight points to take control of set two 19-14. The Panthers weren't quite able to gain momentum and fell 25-18 to go down 2-0 on the Sunday afternoon.
Similar to set one, 'Southern found themselves down 10-9 early in set three. However, four consecutive points highlighted by a
Chloe Staggs ace gave BSC a 13-10 lead. Centre slowly tried to come back, and the set was tied at 19 late. The Panthers were hoping to force a fourth set, but Centre then scored five-straight points again to take a commanding 24-19 lead. They then went on to win set three 25-21 and ultimately complete the sweep.
