PANTHERS SUFFER OVERTIME HEARTBREAKER TO LIONS

DEMOREST, Ga. - The Birmingham-Southern men's basketball team fell in overtime to Piedmont on Sunday despite leading the majority of the night.

After seven minutes of play, both teams were tied at 11 points each. The Panthers then got hot and hit three threes in less than three minutes to take a 22-14 lead. Piedmont cut the deficit to three with 7:45 to go, but excellent defense by BSC kept the Lions scoreless over the next 6:10. In this period, the Panthers went on a 12-0 run to go up 37-22. Piedmont hit two free throws late in the half to end the run but still went into halftime down 13 points.

The Lions trimmed the BSC lead to eight after the opening six minutes of the second half. Then, Samuel Spence hit one of his four threes on the night to give his team a double-digit lead once again. The 'Southern lead stretched to as much as 16 points with 10:28 to go. The Panthers looked to be in the driver's seat, but the Lions went on a 12-1 run in less than three minutes to put themselves within five with 7:35 to go. However, BSC stopped the momentum and went on a 9-1 run highlighted by five Kaleb Green points to take a 13 point lead with a little over five minutes to go. Piedmont kept within striking distance and trailed by 10 with 2:57 remaining in the game. BSC then struggled to put one through the net, and Piedmont caught fire. After cutting the deficit to three, Bailey Wiseman of the Lions hit his second consecutive three this time with 16 seconds remaining to even the score at 73 and force overtime.

Piedmont carried their momentum into overtime and led 80-75 after four possessions. The Panthers cut the lead to two with 1:54 to go after a Kaleb Green three, but the Lions then went on a late 6-0 run to close out the game.
