SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Sophomore right-hander Joey White fired 7.2 innings of shutout baseball to lead No. 4 BSC to a 3-0 win over Trinity University (Texas) in San Antonio on Friday, Feb. 10.
BSC opened up the season on the right foot starting 1-0, while Trinity, dropped to 0-1.
White (1-0) blanked Trinity for 7.2 innings, limiting its hitters to just a one hit while recording a single walk and three strikeouts.
White, last pitched against Trinity in the 2022 Super Regional Round of the NCAA Baseball Championships where he went five innings giving up four runs and striking out three.
Second basemen Andrew Dutton led the Panthers' offensive effort with a two-hit, two-run game including the opening run of the 2023 season. Centerfielder Cam McNearney also recorded two-hits and scored the last of the Panther runs.
Trinity starter Joseph Chavana (0-1) was charged with the loss as he surrendered three runs – three earned – on six hits in six innings with one walk and seven strikeouts.
BSC jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on a balk that scored Dutton, and a sac fly by Jack Fleming that brought home McNearney. A wild pitch with runners on second and third brought in the third and final run for the Panthers in the sixth innings.
Sophomore right-hander Davis Williams worked the final 1.1 innings for BSC to preserve the shutout, as he limited Trinity to one hit, one walks and a pair of strikeouts.
