STRONG PITCHING HELPS BSC WIN TWO ON SATURDAY

SEWANEE, Tenn. - A total of 24 strikeouts over 16 innings helped the Panthers collect two victories on the day as they opened Southern Athletic Association play against The University of the South. Birmingham-Southern collected two victories by scores of 9-1 and 7-2. 

Game one
The Panthers jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead after two innings. Sewanee scored their lone run in the third, but BSC quickly got that back scoring one in the top of the fourth. Joey White and Hansen McCown combined for 16 strikeouts in the game as they limited Sewanee to one run on five hits.

The Panthers moved to 11-1 overall and 1-0 in SAA play while Sewanee dropped to 7-2-1 overall and 0-1 in SAA play.

Sophomore Joey White threw five innings of one run baseball, striking out eight, allowing two hits, and one unearned run. White moved to 4-0 on the season. Hansen McCown relieved White in the sixth inning and would finish the game. McCown threw four innings of shutout baseball, allowing three hits and striking out eight, en route to his second save of the season. 

Andrew Dutton, Will Lantis, and Cam McNearney each recorded a multi-hit game. Dutton led the offense with four hits and a walk while driving in three runs and scoring twice. Lantis recorded three hits, including a triple and two runs scored. McNearney recorded two hits, both singles and stole a base in the win. 

Game two
The Panthers picked up right where they left off recording 12 hits in the 7-2 victory in game two of the doubleheader against The University of the South. The pitching staff allowed two runs on nine hits while striking out eight.

The Panthers moved to 12-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play while Sewanee fell to 7-3-1 and 0-2 in conference play. 

Sophomore Davis Williams picked up his first win as a starter in the 2023 season after throwing five innings allowing eight hits, two runs, and striking out five. Connor Adams pitched the final two innings of the game allowing one hit, no runs, and striking out three. 

Ian Hancock was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate in the second game. Hancock recorded two singles, a double, and a home run, drove in two runs and scored three times. Jack Fleming and Cam McNearney each recorded two hits in the contest. Fleming recorded a double, scoring once, and driving in one other. McNearney, coming off his second multi-hit game drove in a run while recording two singles.
