BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The week the Birmingham-Southern baseball team gets ranked No. 1 in the country for the first time in the Division III era, BSC earns two wins over two regional opponents. The Panthers defeated Covenant 5-4 on Tuesday, Mar. 7 and Huntingdon 19-5 on Wednesday, Mar. 8.
Game one
A low scoring affair saw the Panthers earn their 12th straight victory.
Carter Tyus and
Connor Adams controlled the Scot offense and limited them whenever the momentum started to shift.
Birmingham-Southern improved to 14-1 overall while Covenant fell to 3-4.
Carter Tyus improved to 2-0 on the mound after throwing 5.1 innings, allowing one earned run on two hits while striking out eight.
Connor Adams came in for the final 3.2 innings to earn his third save of the season. Adams allowed one earned run on two hits while striking out four.
Andrew Dutton led the BSC offense going 1-for-2 with three walks and a run scored.
Luke DePiero came off the bench to go 1-for-2 including an RBI triple in the win over Covenant.
Game two
The Panther offense exploded for 19 runs in their second game of the season against the Huntingdon Hawks as they won their 13th game in a row 19-5.
The Panthers improved to 15-1 overall while Huntingdon fell to 8-3 overall.
BSC used four pitchers in the 14-run win over the Hawks.
Luke Jones started his first game of the season throwing 4.0 innings allowing one earned run on two hits and striking out two. Out of the bullpen
Hansen McCown and
Charlie Horne combined for 3.0 innings pitched, one hit and three strikeouts.
The bats were hot on Wednesday night as BSC exploded for 19 runs on 14 hits. Cam McNeaney led the charge for the Panthers going 3-for-4 with four runs scored, five RBI in his two home run performance.
Grant Morgan and
Noah Best each homered in the win as well. Noah would also record a double in the game along with
Luke DePiero. Both
Andrew Dutton and
Jakob Zito recorded triples to give the Panthers eight extra-base hits.
