BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - No. 11 Birmingham-Southern softball swept their midweek doubleheader against Piedmont on Wednesday, adding two wins as they near the end of their regular season schedule.
In the first game of the da,y both teams were scoreless until the fifth inning. The Lions were first on the board with their only run scoring in the top of the fifth on a passed ball. Katie Hart got on base with a single up the middle to lead off the bottom of the sixth. Margaret Axelson drove her in with an RBI double to right center, tying up the game at 1-1. The final run for BSC was scored in the bottom of the seventh with a walk-off single from Katie Hart that scored MC Campbell. Hart made an impact in both the Panthers runs either scoring them or bringing the run in. Hailee Bryan started in the circle and pitched a complete game for Birmingham-Southern, striking out four batters and holding the Lions to one run.
In the nightcap against Piedmont, the Panthers shutout the Lions 5-0. In the bottom of the third, Birmingham-Southern had runners on second and third with two outs. Jordyn Green doubled to left center to drive in Jada Askew and Margaret Axelson to put the Panthers up 2-0. Green scored on the throw by the Lions as they attemped to catch Olivia Trout stealing. Izzy Berkopec sailed a hard hit to the left field fence, hitting the top of the wall, earning herself an RBI triple that scored Hart. The Panthers put up their final run in the bottom of the sixth as Emma Jolley scored on a groundout, taking the second game 5-0 over the Lions.
