BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Birmingham-Southern softball earned two wins to clinch the weekend series against Millsaps on Saturday in the doubleheader. No. 18 Birmingham-Southern put up solid numbers with
Margaret Axelson pitching a career high 13 strikeouts for a full 7-innings in game one.
In the first game of the day Birmingham-Southern and Millsaps were scoreless through the first three innings until a throwing error from third allowed Emma Jolley to reach base and score Margaret Axelson and Alyssa Fowler. The Panthers played a strong defensive game, led by Axelson who only allowed two hits and walked no batters.
The game was Axelson's second 10+ strikeout game and puts her two strikeouts away from 100 this season. It was also her 11th complete game of the season.
In the nightcap against Millsaps, the Panthers got on the board immediately in the first inning on a three-run homerun to left field from Margaret Axelson, scoring Berkopec and Hart. An RBI double from Katie Hart put the Panthers up by 4, Berkopec followed that up with a 2 RBI single that drove in Hart and Morgan McGuire. Alyssa Fowler brought in the final run of the inning with an RBI single to right that gave Birmingham-Southern the early lead 7-0. Millsaps got one back on error from the Panthers that allowed their runner on second to score. The Majors had bases loaded when Olivia Trout came in to pitch for the Panthers. Trout and the Panther defense got out of the inning with a double play, outs at home and first. Birmingham-Southern added four runs on four hits in a strong fourth inning that set them up for a run-rule win. Trout struck out the first batter in the top of the fifth and faced three more before ending the game and earning the 11-1 win for BSC.
