BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Nyla Johnson has been named the next head coach for Birmingham-Southern College's women's basketball program. Athletic Director Kyndall Waters made the hiring announcement Tuesday, May 23. Johnson comes to BSC from Alabama A&M where she spent the last season serving as Assistant Coach for the women's basketball team.

"Nyla comes to BSC with remarkable recommendations from WNBA coaches and high school coaches alike, and when you interact with her, you can see why," said Waters. "Her personality and passion for coaching comes from her deep desire to mentor young women through basketball, and I'm excited to see her establish those relationships and culture at BSC. A new era in BSC Women's Basketball begins now, and it's in great hands."

While at Alabama A&M, Johnson developed team scouting reports, was responsible for guards skills individual workouts, and oversaw the Bulldogs recruiting visits and other recruiting matters. Prior to her stint at Alabama A&M, Johnson spent two seasons as the Assistant Coach at Temple College and three seasons at Alabama A&M first as a Graduate Assistant, then Assistant Coach. At Temple, she coaches two WBCA Juco All-Americans and assisted the program to back to back Regional Finals.

"I am grateful and excited to have been chosen to lead such a prestigious program," Johnson said. "The development of young ladies on and off the court has always been my passion. I am thankful to the administration for trusting me and will do my best to uphold the high standards set by this athletic department and community."

Collegiately, Johnson spent time as a student-athlete at Faulkner University on the Women's Basketball team. Her accolades as a student-athlete include being in the Top 10 in scoring and rebounding, 2012 Freshman of the Year, 2015 Champion of Character and helping her team to a conference championship in the 2012-2013 season, as well as making it to the second round of the National Tournament.
