BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Birmingham-Southern Men's basketball team loses against Berry after a tough shooting night.
A steal created an early fastbreak opportunity for the Panthers leading scorer,
Jay Gillispie.
Brandan Copeland would continue the scoring with a quick trigger 3-point shot to put the Panthers up 5-0. The crowd really got into the game after the first made three by the transfer from Laurleen B. Wallace CC. Berry then went on a 13-2 run to open up a six point lead that would never be lost. Berry dominated the first half with very few missed shots, including over 60 % shooting and 7-12 from beyond the arc. For the Panthers, there was a struggle to get any shot to fall. Birmingham-Southern shot just 1-8 from 3-point range, which was caused by the stiffling viking defense. Everything continued to worsen for the Panthers as Riley Costas layed the ball in to take a 19 point lead. That would be the biggest lead so far and at the half the score was 45-26.
The 2nd half started much of the same was as Berry came out on fire with 10 straight points by four different players. It was a team effort for the Vikings as 10 different players contributed to to the scoring category led by Braxton Benham's 21 points. The Vikings would cool down and allow the Panthers to get back in the game. Birmingham-Southern's normal scoring leaders continued to struggle with Branden Copeland Just shooting 3-10 and
Kaleb Green not making any field goals. Despite the tough shooting night BSC would use a 12-4 run to get back within 15. 66-51 would be the closest the game got at the 4:19 mark. The final four minutes the Panthers only scored four points as the benches were cleared and both teams allowed the younger players to get minutes.
JAy Gillispie led the Panthers with nine points followed by
Brandan Copeland and
Brandan Garrido both scoring eight.
Final Score: Berry wins 75-55
