BSC'S LEAD SLIPS AWAY LATE IN SAA OPENER

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Birmingham-Southern men's lacrosse team opened their SAA season at home on Friday night against a strong Sewanee side. The Panthers fell in a heartbreaker after leading a majority of the game.

How it happened
Sewanee scored the opening goal of the night in a back-and-forth start, but Joey Amatulli tied the score 1-1 with 6:36 to go. The Tigers then went on a 3-0 run to close out the first quarter as momentum seemed to be with the visitors.

Kyle Winter got the second period started with a goal off of a slick pass from Cameron Herd to trim the deficit to two. Four minutes later, Joey Amatulli brought the Panthers within one with his second goal of the game as the first intermission adjustments seemed to be the key. 24 seconds later, Micah Finotti tied the game for the first time since the middle of the first quarter at four a piece. The momentum shift continued as goals from Raymond Fracchia and Cameron Herd gave BSC a two-goal lead. With 7:07 to go in the half, BSC had exploded for four goals in only 1:10 of game time. Cameron Herd later scored his second goal of the game to give 'Southern a 7-4 lead at halftime.

The third period was a defensive battle with only one goal scored between the two SAA teams. Luckily for the home side, Josh Tamarkin scored the lone goal with 10:36 remaining in the quarter to stretch the BSC lead to 8-4.

The Panthers needed to hold on to their four-goal cushion for 15 more minutes, but Sewanee had other plans. They scored their first goal three minutes into the final period and went on to score three more roughly 2:30 apart each. In a tie game, Manoli Loupassi broke the tie for the Tigers with 3:58 to go. BSC mustered a few chances late but couldn't quite put one in the back of the net as they fell 9-8 on the night.
