Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

PANTHERS HELD OFF BY COLONELS, 14-11

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - After a huge first period by Centre, the Birmingham-Southern men's lacrosse team fell at home to last season's conference champions in their second SAA game of the new season.

How it happened
Centre got on the board first after almost three minutes of play, but BSC's Patton Hunter answered on a goal less than a minute later to quickly tie the game back up. The Colonels then exploded for five straight goals to close out the first quarter and take a commanding 6-1 lead after the first 15 minutes.

Centre's lead was stretched to six after scoring the first goal of the second quarter, but goals from Micah Finotti and Kyle Winter roughly 40 seconds apart trimmed the deficit to four. BSC looked to spark a run, but both teams traded goals to close out the opening half as Centre maintained their four-goal lead, 8-4.

BSC's halftime adjustments seemed to work as the Panthers brought new life to start the final 30 minutes. Micah Finotti and Joey Amatulli scored back-to-back goals in a little over a minute to start the third quarter in what looked to be the start of a comeback. However, the Colonels had other plans as the visitors pieced together a 3-0 run to take an 11-6 lead. Similar to the second quarter, both teams traded goals to close out the third.

Like the first and second quarters, Centre got on the board first in the fourth to stretch their lead to six. The game seemed to be out of reach for BSC, but three straight goals in 3:39 gave BSC life. The home side trailed by only three with 9:04 to go. With momentum against them, Centre put on a clinic in game management for the remainder of the afternoon. The visitors scored the next goal in the game and only allowed one more in their net to earn the win, 14-11.

Game notes

  • Cameron Herd recorded three goals and two assists with a ground ball.
  • Cade Marino caused four turnovers and collected eight ground balls.
