BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The #4 ranked Birmingham-Southern baseball team did not have their night as they fell to Covenant in the final game of the 11-game homestand to start the season.
How it happened
In the top of the second inning, the Scots got on the board first with two runs scored on two separate throwing errors. The Panthers could not get the bats going and only managed one hit through the first three innings.
The off night continued for BSC when two more errors led to a 5-0 lead for Covenant in the top of the fourth. With a five-run deficit after 3.5 innings, the Panthers needed to a rally. However, Covenant's Zach Barrett had an excellent night on the mound with only two hits allowed in his shutout five innings.
In the top of the sixth, two singles with two outs set put the leadoff hitter at the plate. Harrison Adelgreen then hit a three-run homer to push the deficit to eight for the Panthers. An RBI single added on an ninth run at the end of the inning, giving BSC a mountain to climb.
Andrew Dutton knocked in the first run for 'Southern on an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh. An
Ian Hancock walk followed by a balk gave BSC three runs before a
Jakob Zito sac fly put the Panthers within five with six outs remaining.
The Scots the went on to close the game out and complete the upset, 9-4.
